About the artist
Currently my work has centered around the exploration of memory and aesthetics related to how locations appear within their contexts. Growing up in two places with very different cultures has influenced my studio practice. By choosing specific imagery, language, commodities, colors, and textures the compositions reflect sentimentality as it relates to my experiences in cultural diversity. Perspectives in which romanticism and contemporary art coincide.
Through the process of printmaking it allows my studio practice to translate memory into tangible elements. The use of color in some pieces , and lack there of in others, plays forward the more intense feelings of my memory. Meanwhile the clarity, density/ weight of some of the work conveys the tangible aspects of consciousness. All of this is an opportunity to question the connection between my memories and my identity through the progression of locations in time.
As a painter my pieces are investigations of practices and lifestyles which can be seen as either taboo in their fetish or empowering in their intimacy, within my work the viewer is encouraged to make their own conclusions. Drawing experience from my own personal history and the many stories of my models and peers, I’m able to construct vibrant mixed media paintings with manifold symbolism which incite the viewer to make new personal associations. In my most recent work entitled “H.H” I’ve decided to use a feminine figure as the victim in the painting and use another faceless figure to explore the horrors and history of the most infamous murders surrounding women in a more cinematic and intimate way.
Much like my printmaking, my film-making is a time of exploration and experimentation. Similar shapes and themes can be seen throughout all of my work with the same attraction to line, texture, and love of color.
